Oktoberfest Costumes, Oktoberfest Party
They had met at Oktoberfest just after they had each left Uni.
They became engaged at Oktoberfest the year after that.
It made perfect sense, therefore, to hold an annual Oktoberfest Fancy Dress Costume party every year after they were married. They never missed one….well except one horrendous year when Grandma and Pop died in a terrible bus accident…in Munich of all places. On their way, a group tour for oldies, to the Oktoberfest believe it or not! We found out about it on the TV news of all places….just awful.
All dressed in full Bavarian costume - Gran in a sweet little Alpine Milk Maid costume and Pop in his Lederhosen costume with the matching suspenders and silly hat. God what was it with my family and our obsession with German festivities??!!
Anyway here she was, this time alone.
But just because she was on her own now, didn’t mean she couldn’t slap on her ever faithful Gretchen the Sexy Beer Girl costume and laugh, drink too much beer and behave badly with her favourite people.
Couldn’t she?
Tom and Barb from next door were out the back fixing up the marquee – for goodness sake Tom’s costume ALONE meant she had to have this party. His costume actually lit up and, at the appropriate moment, the hat would explode with fireworks and start whistling the theme to ‘She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain’….unless the battery died – or caught fire like it did last year. You can imagine the fuss…….
My bedroom door flew open. “So how do I look?”
In a flash of German-inspired frockery, she twirled herself and her purposely chosen fancy dress costume across my carpet – two long fake blonde plaits flayed out around her.
“You look awesome Mum”, I laughed. In real life her costume looked ridiculous…a cross between a crazed Bavarian Bar Wench and a tarty Heidi from the Alps. She had way too much makeup on and her pushed up cleavage made her chest look hugely out of proportion to the rest of her. Funny though, with her bursting excitement and her mere courage to wear the costume in the first place, she got away with it. The perfectly appropriate Oktoberfest fancy dress costume I thought.
“Dad would’ve loved this” I said, feeling guilty for happy thoughts.
“Yeah” said Mum in mid twirl …”he would”. She paused, looking sad and suddenly real for a split second….THEN the almighty sound of German folk music and a chorus of Yah Yah’s meant that Barb had found the Oktoberfest Beer Anthems CD. She’d obviously got sick of Tom fluffing round with every little detail out the back and had decided her fantastic newly-acquired Bavarian Beauty costume wasn’t meant for ‘roadie’ work.
And the racket of half-cut, giggling costume-wearing Beer Maidens from the drive meant that Mum’s work mates had arrived.
“Lets go!” she grabbed my hand and we spun our gorgeously matching Fraulein costumes out of the room and into the guaranteed silliness of the night.
